I just hate my remarks out of full context...

The SAAB turbo engine ( regardless of fuel in the tank) makes more than enough power to gently accelerate down the road.

The knock sensor(s) working together with the computer (ECU), fuel air mixture and spark timing of the Trionic T7 engine management system to maximize engine power.

More power = more fuel

Your engine is putting out more power that is needed to gently accelerate or cruise down the road.

Conversely, when you use a lower octane fuel (87) the knock sensor (s)directs the computer to retard timing and make needed a/f adjustments.

Less engine power = less fuel.

Gasoline, regular or premium has about the same energy (115,000 btu's), hence the fuel mileage is a function of the engine management system.

More power = more boost = more fuel = LOWER Mpgs.

You can read the full context of Mike and my discussion on this topic on the 9-5 BB if you like. The post is a May 1 posting called "Regular Unleaded gas".

Drivers generally "say" that 87 gives lower mileage, and my reply is posted over with the 9-5 discussion to the effect that after driving on 93/92 octane, switching to 87 is a loss of torque. Drivers find themselves pressing much harder on the gas pedal to get the power back which results in lower fuel economy.

Seeing 2 identically equipped SAAB turbos in the lab--one with 87 fuel and the other with 93 fuel shows the results scientifically.

Thanks
