in the past year, can't recall which rag (C&D maybe?), where they compared fuel economy of two shifting habits.
1. Accelerating rapidly, shifting at higher rpm's, getting in high gear sooner.
2. Accelerating lazily, holding gears longer, shifing into high gear later.
The mpg winner, number 1.
It had nothing to due to the "higher efficiency" of the engine at higher rpm's, but rather the reduced time spent at the higher rpm's, you were shifting into high gear (and thus low rpm) sooner.
So every time that I take off, smoking the tires, and the wife tells me to grow up, I just tell her that I'm doing my part to save the planet.
Disclaimer: I don't recall what the article used as reference, could have been the BMW study from the 1970's, but I thought that it was newer.
