We had a Corean kitchen for 8 years. Our new kitchen has granite (and what that cost could have upgraded the wife's 03 Linear 9-5 to an Aero with money to spare :-)). If I may us the automotive analogy, the Corean is Toyota, i,e. it works and that's about it. Granite is like a Saab (ok, stop laughing). More maintenance, a bit more expensive, but much more rewarding visually and also in terms of practical use.
If you have kids and / or cook a lot and want a spotless kitchen, Corean may be easier to take care of. Granite, despite the macho image, needs TLC. Sort of like leather seats. I know we've all seen the demo of the frying pan off the mega-burner and onto granite, but I would not try this on a countertop that expensive. You need to seal it (depending on type) and you need to be careful not to spill some things. It may be advertised as indestructible but ours cost $6800, so I'm not taking chances.
Installation is also important. Corean is easy to deal with, not so granite, where even a half inch hole to pass a softener spout has to be done with the utmost care.
