Had an unusual coloured (marbled green from Afghanistan called "Costa Rica) granite top installed 2 years ago, and despite not having sealed it since the initial installation, it looks just like new, and really lovely all cleaned up. We got the full back splash, right up to the cabinets. If I had done one thing differently, it would have been to spend the extra for a different edge profile, some of those are really classy - we just got the regular rounded edges.
The price was similar to Corian, but looks much more distinctive - also a better resale point, if you plan on selling your home at some point.
The undermount sink is easier to clean, too.
Go to a marble/granite warehouse (you can't use marble for counters though) and look at all the selections. You'll see many that never seem to show up in showrooms, and can choose your own pieces, depending on your vendor.
