I used 18" granite tiles for about half the cost of a granite slab.

This was about 9 years ago. At that time I paid about $9 per square foot for the tiles and another $9 or so per foot for the installation.

Since the cost was moderate, I did the entire backsplash with the granite tiles. This is an unusual look, but, to me, quite attractive. The installers cut and polished a quarter round everywhere there was going to be an edge exposed.

The sides of the counters are a granite strip about 2 inches wide, just like a laminate counter wuld be done.

I had them set the tiles close so there would be only a thin grout line, and used a grout similar in color to the granite.

I love the granite, because you can use every inch of the counter as a cutting board.

I've been quite happy with the results. I'm the cook in our house, and I'll never have another counter that's not granite.
