When I moved from CO to PA I had very well done tinted windows on my 1986 9000T, (large volume of glass on that car) legal by Colorado standards, but not so in PA. They would not pass it on state inspection, tint had to come off.
As a law abiding citzen, I feel these types of laws imposes upon my right to privacy, and while cognizant of the need to protect law enforcement personnel, I feel the real problem is the proliferation of unlicensed guns and lax sentencing of offenders.(can you say drive by shootings) In many European countires you go to jail if you are in possesion of an unlicensed fire arm.
And, I believe that the rear windows of pickups and SUVs in many states are allowed to tint their rear windows, as well as being subjected to less stringent emissions standards on the federal level.
I've written my elected representatives regards this misdirected legislation.
