Hey,
Randy is right, communicating won't be a problem. Most Dutch speak better English than the average American; they don't even subtitle their English language TV. Even the hobos fluently speak several languages - it's truly amazing. I've had no problems as an American in the post-Dubya era anywhere is Europe; people might speak their mind, but they realize that he doesn't represent every American, and most "fun" travelers dislike the guy as much as they do.
Amsterdam is a fascinating place. It's really a dichotomy of world-class art, music and culture, combined with a truly seedy drug and sex culture. My experience as a young single guy might be a bit different, but I was offered hard drugs, sex, and stolen goods within the first half-hour of getting off the train. The red light district is definitely worth checking out, especially in the evening. Heck, go to a sex show if that's your thing. Coffee shops are easy to find, though the "menu" can be a little overwhelming. Try to find a good guidebook (eg Lonely Planet or Rough Guide) that discusses such things. Touristy places can be fun, but as with any trip, try to get off the beaten path. Either way, look for the little green approval sticker.
The art scene is great (the classic and the modern), though last time I was there many of the museums were under various stages of renovation - hopefully not the case now! Things like taking a ride on the canals can also be a lot of fun, the architecture is very interesting, and though I'm not really into classical music, I hear that Amsterdam is a great place for that too.
I would also recommend taking a day trip out of the city or you might get a little burned out, so to speak. There are some great small Dutch downs to visit; a quick trip to The Hague (and the coast if the weather is nice) and Delft might be nice.
Hope this helps and have a great time! Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any other questions. I'm no expert by any means, but I'll do what I can.
Take care,
Craig
