I would transfer out ASAP. A college that is de-emphasizing engineering is not the place to be. It's bad enough that many engineering curriculums are highly theretical and math intensive where practical aspects of engineering do not count! Also, the common denominator of engineering grads is proficiency in math. High school students good at math should consider engineering major.
A couple other comments. My son started UI as an AE and quickly transfered to ME after the first shuttle failure. He worked summers for a aero company and was heavily exposed to real engineering. The ME curriculum was very frustrating to him due to the continueing stream of "math courses" that had very little content other than math. He deferred from pursuing a PHD in engineering for that reason. In another instance I observed a new engineer examining a failed torque converter, and asked him how it was going. He replied the biggest shock of his life was going from college, where there was a correct answer to to everything, to real world in which answers to problems were not apparent.
