At least as far as vehicle tags are concerned, I think vehicles should be taxed on weight and possibly # of cylinders. This works out to be pretty logical because it would take into account how much damage is done to the highway, how much space the vehicle takes up on the highway, how much fuel it is probably using, what kind of infrastructure needs to be in place to support it.
In my state, tag taxes are calculated on the value of the vehicle. The tax goes down as the vehicle depreciates from year to year. This penalizes
someone who buys a nice new expensive but possibly lightweight and fuel efficient vehicle. The tax for the use of the roadways should remain the same each year no matter what.
I don't like SUV's for numerous reasons but I believe people should be able to buy them if that's what they want. I just think they should just pay their fair share for the use of the roadways and inconvenience to others.
