I don't want to write anything negative here about AOL, but they do not own any infrastructure at all... they are simply providing a glorified ISV service with the old model of providing huge content and portal capabilities. Their broadband "service" piggybacks on leased fiber or cable already in place by MCI, Comcast, TW, etc.

We, the computer savvy, have long ago known that you can launch a browser, and it can dial up XYZ Internet, and get linked to the Internet. But most people, especially kids using IM, are of the impression that they need AOL to talk to their buddies or get their email.

I think it is fair to describe the AOL business model as doomed. But they still have enormous market share, and people are very unwilling to change their email addresses.
