AOL--or Amateurs on Line, as I refer to it was great when the Internet was harder to deal with. Nowadays it is the Internet with training wheels.
There is no value-add that I can see. My kids and I all IM just fine using their AIIM software over Earthlink and they get their email from my business domain. No biggie. And any ISP gives you email, so where's the advantage? Changing an email address for consumers is really no biggie.
But as Eric notes AOL won't go away because they DO make it simple for the technically challenged, which is the average consumer...who also can't program their VCR.
However, AOL is in the spot of selling a what is really becoming a commodity and they will have to add value to keep people on board. There is no real value evident in the Time/Warner deal, and without having pipes of their own they will have to drop prices to continue competing. And browsers will get better and other ISPs will offer portal-like front-ends.
That's my .02.
