I too am in the technology arena and am not a big fan of AOL. I have always accessed the WWW directly and do not find value in the content AOL provides.
That being said, as Eric rightfully points out, MANY non-technical folks out there LOVE AOL and will continue to use them. I don't think getting 'smarter' will dissuade them from the service.
What may happen, as it did for your parents, is that some people may leave because they feel duped by AOL. AOL cleverly ('fraudulently'?) markets AOL Broadband as a stand-alone service whereas we all know it piggybacks onto whatever broadband the consumer uses. This means that the AOL subscriber must pay for both the broadband and the AOL service (I had to explain this multiple times to my mother-in-law - even so, she chose to stay with AOL because she is used to it).
Don't forget also, the two hooks AOL has on its users, the email address and IM, make the switching cost too high for users.
Am I the only one that judges someone by their aol.com email address? Very shallow of me...
