The real issue is not exclusive content, which may actually make it worthwhile to subscribe. Also, parental controls are fairly decent if you have online-active kids like I do. The big issue for us (and we dumped AOL) was spam; they simply could not handle it. I created accounts for my children, maximum security, not visible, etc and NEVER used them, and if they were anything remotely mnemonic (a word and a number) the accounts would start getting spam in a day or two, even with max security. Maybe they fixed it, tho I doubt it.
As far as buying stock, this coming from a current AOL/TWX sucker, er, investor, don't. The way I see it, if their stock barely budged after LOTR's triplet and three Harry Potter movies, AOL or no AOL, it ain't going anywhere. In my view AOL had their chance and blew it by pricing their service thru the roof. I could see them do RoadRunner + AOL for $5 more but at the current price, it's a no-go.
