Scott,
Like many others here, I'm an IT guy and there's no love lost between me and AOL. But I must disagree somewhat with the other posters that they're "doomed".
Like it or not, the various efforts made to stamp out computerphobia have only been partially successful - there's still a large segment of the population that finds computers to be confusing and/or intimidating. It's these people that keep AOL going.
What AOL is selling is not the technical aspects - POP's, broadband, etc., they're selling an *image* - the image of ease-of-use. Whether that image is realistic or not I won't debate here ;^) Hell, cigarette companies have made billions selling a product that kills their customers by using image marketing!
In context, what this means IMHO is that whether AOL actually owns the pipes is pretty much irrelevant. If my stepmother receives a promotion for AOL broadband, she's likely to sign up for the same reason she uses AOL dial-up now - it's "easy to use". And that's just about all she cares about.
So while AOL isn't my favorite company in the whole wide world, I wouldn't write them off just yet. Just my 2 cents of course!
