Slow growth maybe, but not doomed. Lets face it -- those that are not online today (and there are many) are not online because either they are timid about technology or do not have the financial means to own a PC. That said, if that group is ever to move to using the internet, they would be likely candidates for AOL solutions that make it easy or pay as ou go...
Some of the broadband solutions are not easy to use and require people to use wireless technology or even a NIC. Many non-technical family members I have tried to convert to broadband solutions are hesitant despite my free help.
So I think AOL will see small growth over time. The cost of their service is high so they could drop the price and compete on price. DSL and Cable modem access can be expensive and AOL could easily put the mom and pop dial-ups out of business. I think owning the pipes is irrelevant.
All that said the fact that TWX ever bought AOL was a poor decision and likely ego driven. There is a potential gain from the overall information collected on such a large media base across television, movies, and internet -- they do have entertainment data cornered. There is value in that...just a matter of how they use it.
