Of course you shouldn't trust pharmaceutical companies completely, because they are a good example of having another agenda than the doctor/patient. They want to earn money, we want the best treatment possible.
As for the Wise Traditions website, a lot of what is written in that article is misleading or straight out wrong. They make it sound like statins reduce all cholesterol, and go on to write that HDL is good for you etc etc. The fact is that statins increase HDL, not lower it. It is LDL that is lowered. The article is pseudoscientific no matter how many sources they tack on it.
As for your assertion that people lived longer generations back and were unimaginably more healthy than today, I'm sorry but I can't take that seriously ;) There are tons of things that were deadly a couple of generations back, but are now harmless because of modern medicine.
Yes there is a problem with some people overeating and getting extremely obese in modern society, but that is not caused by medicine. Everyone knows that eating sushi is better for your heart than eating burgers, but the problem is doing it.
I agree that you shouldn't limit yourself to a single scientist's opinion, but I don't see anyone in this thread doing that? Also yes It's a great idea to learn about things yourself, but don't make the mistake of thinking that because a theory is new and spectacular it must be true. Any scientist can argue until he's blue in the face without getting anywhere. What it comes down to is hard evidence like large scale clinical trials. There isn't a single large scale clinical trial that has shown statins to be more dangerous than beneficial, and until there is, I'm sorry, but it's just a lot of hot air.
