Zeke,
You seem to have a problem with financial services and are confused about derivatives. Perhaps you didn't read my post carefully or understand it. Financial services actually benefit the entire economy and serve a purpose other than making a few rich. If you think that engineers and employees of Exxon or UT are somehow more altruistic because they're not on Wall Street, guess again.
In both finance and science, you use derivatives, integrals, differential equations and matrix algebra in everyday calculations. Yeah the same ones that engineers use.
However, in my post, I was merely referring to financial derivatives not in the calculus sense but as a standard product that investment banks offer their customers. The most basic of these are Put and Call options or futures that are traded just like the underlying equities or debt instruments(stocks or bonds). The range of derivative products goes on and on from there. The work that Goldman does goes far beyond the typical accounting/finance functions of a typical manufacturing company.
Your comment, "To take on large investment projects requires complicated insurance schemes involving exchange rates, the future costs of materials, etc., needed to place bids on or finance a project," makes me think that you have a bit of homework to do before you make sweeping statements and negatively judge financial services as a career.
