Last night, I drove from my apartment in downtown Albany to Mom's house, out in the boonies SW of Albany ~ 45 mins in dry, 65 mins in snow. The snow was coming down hard and blowing around alot. In these conditions, high beams are useless, all you can see are snowflakes in front of you, and not the road. Lows are ok, you can somewhat see the road, but not the edges, the ditch or the condition of the snow you are driving into (tracked, icy, fresh, slushy etc). Lows and driving lamps are not a sensational miracle fix that makes the snow disappear, but work really nicely to allow you to see the edge of the road (nice when there is a plow coming the opposite direction) and what the road is like condition wise. I have lived in upstate NY my whole life and driven in winter conditions as long as I had my license. After having 4 cars w/out driving lights, and 2 with I would not have a car without driving lights now, just for those 15 days a year when they help out.

On a related anti-rant, as much as I like the 9-3 with 4 snows, I miss the hell out of my QSW (quattro VW) with 4 snows. AWD is fantastic and is not a fad, a gimmick, or useless.

Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.
