I've had some cheap fogs that were no better than fancy parking lights. So I'm talking about real foglights.

When it's foggy, don't expect them to do magic. You aren't gonna see much farther down the road. But they illuminate the sides of the road better, which otherwise gets real dark when it's foggy. You see the sides of the road with your peripheral vision, it helps guide you down the road.

Yes, they have to be aimed correctly. So do your main headlights...

Newer main-headlights (in USA) are better than they were 20 years ago (duh), so not many cars have all the upwards scatter that was common with sealed-beam lights.
