Be sure to look ahead, unless you're in some serious congestion, you should frequently look as far ahead as you can--that way you can anticipate what is going to happen most times long before it does. Develope a scan cycle with priorities based-on conditions, don't forget to include the horizon and your rear/side views. Don't focus on any one thing for too long, constantly scan and evaluate your position relative to all conditions. Leave space. Pay freakin' attention to what you're doing.
Also, go to a parking lot and practice braking. It is amazing that most people truly don't know what to do in a panic stop. Make sure that a young driver has a chance to feel what anti-lock modulating in the brake pedal feels-like. If no ABS, teach pedal modulation to keep the wheels rolling. Have them do some 40 to zero panic stops. Teach them how to turn while applying maximum braking.
And widen your side-view mirrors to reduce any blind spots. A person should not be able to see the sides of the car they're driving in the side-view mirrors. Park with the back of the car facing a scene with detail and set the mirrors with only about an inch or so of side|rear|side view-field overlap in the rearview. Most people drive with their side-views basically focused on the same viewing field that the rearview covers. It's a strange sensation at first, but a person does not need to see the sides of the car as a reference.
