Thanks.

I think borrowing from other "disciplines" is useful. We've heard from motorcycle and boating folks ("Always yield to tonnage" - I like that), but we have a lot to learn from aviation:
1. Smoothness - think how much we appreciate this in our commercial pilots. You virtually never fly with one who is not smooth.
2. Anticipation of problems - I once read a book by this guy who flew his Piper twin and would have a pre-takeoff mantra of, out loud, going over what he would do if one of his engines failed on take-off. He would repeat to himself the minimum single engine controllable airspeed. On one occasion, he said something like, "If the left engine quits, I will turn left over those houses and go towards the beach, and ..." The left engine quit, and he was barely able to make it to the beach, where he ditched the plane because he could not maintain minimum controllable airspeed without descending. He saved his life that day.

In driving, the "situations" come up much more frequently, and you need to be asking "what if..." constantly. This was taught to me in driver's ed. Anticipate a problem and plan a course of action. The drive-o-trainer was a great devise and allowed us to test our skills in this arena. Sometimes the best course of action was to brake and go straight ahead into the obstacle, because you don't want to hit the group of kids to the right or the oncoming car to the left.

3. Attention. Enough said.
4. Skills. This topic has been underrepresented in this thread, IMHO. It is majorly stressed in flying. Anybody ever try S turns across a road? Very difficult with a crosswind. Flying is harder than driving, so skills are a bigger issue there, but how many drivers truly have the skills to control their car adequately in all conditions?
5. Recurrent training. All pilots do it. In driving, opportunities are fewer, so we're on our own, mostly, to constantly upgrade our skills, unless you take a driving course.
