Sounds like a great kid.
Wow, lot of opinions on this topic. Here's mine, based on my experience as an early career academic (prof)**.
I echo the opinion that Ivy isn't worth it for undergrad. Many schools offer high quality education and, as others have said, university is primarily what the student makes of it. In selecting a school, I would heavily weight factors of geography and/or cultural diversity. If a student is interested in natural sciences (bio, geo), for example, a place like Alaska has unparalleled opportunities for undergraduate field research. Not to mention awesome weekend adventures. Or, if interests are different, perhaps English-speaking universities in Amsterdam or Montreal (McGill). Or UC Santa Cruz (surf!). With so many interesting options, it would be a shame to spend 4 y in Connecticut.
With respect to grad school, I don't think school reputation matters all that much -- except perhaps for explicitly career-grooming programmes like MBAs (with which I have no experience). For thesis-based science programmes, what matters to advancement after school is the quality of your research, which is measured primarily by quality of publications. As long as one does good stuff (and plenty of people at lower price public institutions do great stuff) one generates opportunities.

** I was accepted into but declined an Ivy PhD programme. I choose instead 'lesser' school for reasons of geography. I've never regretted it, and have never felt it held me back. More recently, I was offered but declined a faculty position at one of the schools you mentioned, for a number of reasons. No regrets there either!
