I realize the "global V6" that will appear in the '06 9-3 Aero and SportCombi is not new news around here, but is anyone else disappointed by the power ratings of this engine? A 2.8L V-6 turbo that will pump out 250 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. Do those numbers ring a bell with anyone? They exactly match the output of the aging 2.3L I4 offered in the current 9-5 Aero. So we get a 20+% increase in displacement (plus all the extra weight that goes along with it) and 0.000000% more grunt. That's progress?????
Now I realize there's more to this engine than just hp ratings, but if Saab wants to grab the attention of the casual comparison shopper, it needs to put up some more impressive figures. The 9-3 Aero needs 300hp and AWD, and it needs it now. Overkill? Probably, but that's the competitive standard today. Maybe the car I just described will show up as the '08 or '09 9-3 Viggen, but that's way too late.
I fully understand that Saab's hands are tied tightly by the GM beancounters, but that all the more reason they need to hit a homerun every time the General lets them come up to bat. This is at best a single up the middle. OK, but not very exciting.
