I have read that the platform GM uses for the SAAB 9-3 (Epsilon) is a FWD-only platform, not capable of retrofitting for AWD.
Funny thing you mention that SAAB borrows "everything" from Subaru, but the only thing that's actually come to market so far is SAAB's rebadging and minor modification of the Impreza WRX, in the form of the 9-2X.
Call me a nut, but I wouldn't object to SAAB "borrowing" a 4-cylinder inline turbocharged "boxer" powerplant from Subaru. The low center-of-gravity provides for excellent handling and it's not like SAAB has been designing its own powerplants of late...
Although a lot of partnership deals have been announced between the two companies there has been surprisingly little which has actually come to market.
