"So we get a 20+% increase in displacement (plus all the extra weight that goes along with it)"
FWIW, I doubt the new V6 is really heavier. In addition to the more efficient packaging of a V6, the newer model is Al block, vs the older Iron block I4.
I believe that there are a number of good, practical reasons that Saab has chosen the new V6 over the old 2.3T for this application
1. Marketing. For better of for worse, many people expect a V6 for their $35K.
2. Platform compatibility. This V6 engine family fits in the Epsilon platform, a platform that was not designed to take the 2.3T
3. Continual OBD-emissions requirements. It will continue to take a lot of effort to update/certify the umpteen year old 2.3T design, to what end, it is unlikely to be seen in the next 9-5.
4. Headroom. Saab can turbocharge the heck out of this thing for years to come for a lot more horsepower, they can only blow the 2.3T so hard before it pops (witness Viggen cracked pistons). This is also the same basic block that GM uses for the 3.6L, so they can bore (or stroke) this block too. This block is at the beginning of its life, not end of life. This is what you get with the new engine, it may not knock your socks off now, but it will be around for a while, in much more potent form, you can be assured.
