When I driving in michigan with viggen and other manual transmission car (mostly my pick up truck with tow dolly or trailer) I prefer to use engine brake instead on brake..
however, after read couple of scary posts about broken B235R engine with 4th gear & high rpm, I was kind of stopped to do that.
then after.. I realize myself sometimes forget to upshift sometimes..
like drive car for triple digits in 4th gear and blah blah..
(Probably, I thought when I downshift, it gives more stress to the motor than purely running high rpm from low..)
Now.. to be honest with you.. I don't care about that.. (with 8 year unlimited miles engine warranty.. I have my oil change reciept with me all the time and 10,20,30Ks are in the IRIS system..)
another thing is.. as far as gas wise and turbo wise. it's much better for the car instead of using pure brake..
When I give one of my manual transmission 9-3 conv to my G.F. she didn't know how to use engine brake (and still does..) even though, she is much slower driver than me and have longer distance to drive (from her school to our home..etc..) her cars' MPG is still same as my viggen conv. (her unit was B205L then right now is B205R due to roll over accident)
there are two side of this habit.. one of them is dangerous..
not only over rev. but lost of the control as well.
One time, in the michigan snow, I used engine brake as a habit in narrow ramp of I-75.. it made quite of the scene like crazy japanese drifters..
after that, I'm more careful to use enginebrake than regular foot brake..
another side is dangerous too..
some of stupid drivers in U.S... they only put brakes when they saw brake lights of the vehicle that in front of him...
So, when you use engine brake instead of foot brake.. you have increased possiblity of rear-end.. you should laugh..but it's simply true..
I've experienced two accident in michigan when I use engine brake on the road.. one time was somebody spinned right behind me, when I used engine brake to reduce great deal of speed.. his car went to ditch and I was kind of chased as reason of accident for about 10 miles.. then it was solved..
another one is, when turn right the side road of my apartment, even though I put the blinkers on,, somebody hit my quarter panel and pushed my car and made me spin about 270 degree..
and what he was saying was.. "I thought he forget to turn off the blinkers.."
so if you're careful about that.. I think it's more benifit for the driver to use the engine brake than not.
