This is really what it comes down to, and what the conditions call for.
Having driven hundreds of K's of miles in cars and trucks with manual trannies, and *never* worn out a clutch or transmission, and as a chronic downshifter, I'm inclined to disagree with those who claim 'brake pads are cheaper than synchro's/clutches'. Indeed they are but that's not a reason to not downshift.
The thing to keep in mind is that when purely disc braking, you have the benefit of automatically modulated antilock on all four wheels. This could be critical on surfaces of questionable traction. Engine braking is kinda dumb in that regard.
For me, downshifting is more part of sport driving which allows a smoother transition thru curves. But because it's a skill, I tend to do it more just to keep in practice.
Plus, too much braking makes my wheels dirty, which I hate.
