1. It's how much the engine revs up when you downshift that matters.
- if you're downshifting from a very high speed into 4th gear from 5th, you're probably doing more damage, (although blipping the throttle helps here)
- with more transmission gears that have closer sequential ratios, the engine speed differential between say 6th gear and 5th gear at a given vehicle speed is lower, causing less wear on the transmission parts. Now if you have a 4 speed manual, the differential is higher, causing more wear.
2. The engine has inertia from its spinning so disengaging the clutch and using the brakes may allow the fastest stops because it disconnects the wheels from the engine.
- this way you don't hurt the transmission (although would it hurt the clutch(?)), and you brake more quickly.
One question... how does downshifting affect an automatic tranny adversely?
