Only if you have a nice and friendly lender (not bloody likely for most of us) will they work with you to remove the PMI without refinancing the whole loan.
No chance in hell if you have Fanniemay/Freddiemac.
The more quicker and easier way is to just getting some refi qoutes/promise to lend from another lender (which will include having to pay for an appraiser) and with those in hand telling your lender that either they do it or you go with another.
I just saw PMI as being a tool for me to get into a house and didn't really think twice about paying it. We all pay one or another way for things that we can't pay cash for.
Since I was lucky and house prices went up, when I refinanced with another lender 2 years later, the PMI was not an requirement since my LTV was better that 80/20.
