I am not an expert at violins, but I do know a thing or two about guitars. The last few years have seen amazing advances for cheap imported instruments. When I was searching for a nylon-stringed classical guitar last year (needed to expand my playing into other genres), I was absolutely shocked at what $129 could buy for a beginner. OK, the wood on the bodies is multi-ply instead of solid (duller sound), but the fit and finish, and more importantly the set-up/playability were very good. Laser cutting, exotic hardwoods, real inlays, reasonable hardware, etc., makes for great value for a beginning/intermediate player. All done with labor paid at slave wages, or close to it. I imagine a similar paradigm is there for violins.
By the way, I wound up buying Canadian, our source of low-cost labor and healthy old Spruce trees to the north.
