How hard is it to play the violin?

I know we have music majors/spouses of music majors here...I was one myself. But I never touched the violin, and have always wanted to. I get a great sense of accomplishment from just picking up an instrument, spending lots of time with it, and just learning to get a decent sound from it (I'm really into the chromatic harmonica at the moment). This wouldn't be in terms of reading music, or in a virtuostic or classical sense...more in a folkish/fiddle-type way...to add a few notes to my Apple Garageband compositions and such. Plus I just noticed that Target now sells violins...yep, right there next to the cordless phones. I know the proper thing to do would be to learn on a high-quality instrument, but come on, how cool would it be to check out at Target with some boxer briefs, a diet coke, and...oh yeah this VIOLIN. Thanks for any inspiration/discouragement : )
