O.T. Where should I take my life?

So I am a recent graduate with a B.A. in American Studies and Urban Geography from the University of Minnesota. I am really passionate about the history and current direction of metropolitan and regional growth. I am a nut for physical and geographic history, e.g. historic districts and the buildings within them. I am also very big on social capital and community development.
I thought for a while about historic preservation but was somewhat deterred when I read the section 106 laws and noted the limitations they put upon reuse. I have a big interest with urban renewal projects that have predilections for some matter of historic preservation.
My ideal dream fantasy job would be a scout for a real estate re-development firm. I would love to look for old abandoned properties and find ways to make them useful again while maintaining the historic structure and maybe highlighting its historical significance. I see this as a win win win win situation, for the city, nearby property owners, the environment, and history.
So I haven’t found any employment that could even grow into this type of work. I have looked at urban planning but have found it to be too technical for my liking. I am beginning to entertain feelings of despair. Many people tell me that I have a great mind for politics, another passion of sorts, and that I should look for opportunities there. I have been looking but haven’t found much. I always thought that this is something I would get into later in life.
I recently interviewed for a position with an intellectual property law firm. They are a new spin-off of a well known large firm. The position is for a legal assistant, basically a legal secretary. I had my second interview yesterday and heard today that they are checking my references. They would like a verbal two-year commitment from me but I am not sure I can commit.
During my interviews I was asked, in so many words, why I would want this job. It was basically put to me that I appear to be too talented, motivated, even qualified for the position, but they would have me.
Law school has always been a consideration for me, though I don’t have a great deal of interest in practicing law. The other thing is that I know nothing of IP law but can see how I might find it interesting, especially trademark law. I think this may be a good experience although I am not terribly interested in it.
Thanks for listening I would like to hear your thoughts, opinions and advice.
