Don't jump yet.

Based on the way you describe your interest, you may have to take a more entrepreneurial approach. It is not surprising that there are not a lot of employers looking to hire historic re-use facilitators.

Perhaps you would do better identifying cities that have onerous re-use requirements, then talking to the histgoric preservation group types in those cities, leading eventually to the lawyers, lobbyists, politicians and real estate developers in those cities. It's a who-you-know kind of thing. Think networking.

You don't really want to end up like Marilyn Monroe! Lots of opportunity in the firdl you have chosen, you just need to find the right doors to knock on.

If you are interested in Seattle, try talking to Michael Hirschensohn who directs the Museum of History and Industry there. He's a great preservationsit and there are people like him everywhere. (Seattle is so crazy they just landmarked a little 50s modern branch library.)
