I am also looking at the same re-hab/re-use field. I did the work thing for almost 15 years and quit my job last year to finish my degree. Right now I'm in Charleston, SC, going to the Collge of Charleston.

I'm graduating next year with a Bachelor's in Historic Preservation and Urban Planning. The school just started a grad. program last year in the same and its one option I'm consdiering. If you're willing to move, you might want to consider some alternate areas of the country. The southern states, for instance, seem to offer more options for this kind of work because the cities are not as large as, say, the Northeast (I'm from NY).

Another aspect to consider is taking the law job you mentioned and gaining some good knowledge that may be applicable to the dream job. Two years is really not so long and you might start making contacts to help you get into what you want to do.

By the way, I have the passion for decrepit buildings too. They are awesome and there can be a lot of satisfaction in saving what others deem unworthy!
