industry, and already had my foot in the door. I found that smaller companies tended to have see-saw success at bidding for and being awarded contracts. I was usually the first laid off. That was OK for while as I was flexible and was learning where I really wanted to live. Soon, though, I wanted the more long-term experience to see how I really did competing with other engineering grads and to get more experience to get my PE registration. I worked for government contractors and soon after the Corps of Engineers itself. I then tired of not being military minded (I didn't know what all the stripes meant & the folks got pretty pissed at that) and went back to a private consulting firm.
Try staying flexible & prepared to move around a bit until you find what suits you. You'll find a niche soon enough. Good luck!
