Some excellent answers and great advice above! I have worked with the Feds now for 23 years. Spent the first four years out of college working private side. In that first four years I rairly had opportunity/time for vacation and worked many, many, hours of un-paid overtime. Was laid off during a slump in work...pink slip in the inbox on a Friday afternoon....along with everyone else. And brutal office politics on the private side as it seemed careers were made by climbing on the bodies of coworkers. No thanks.
I have enjoyed working for the Fed. Many very interesting professional experiences and opportunities to travel/work almost anywhere. I doubt I could have had similar opportunities on the private side. Perhaps not as much money, but they require I take my vacation every year (26 days) and I am compensated for overtime and any travel off work hours. Lots of BS, and some days aren't so great, but that seems the case anywhere.
What the heck, you'll probably want/have to work for forty or so years, do both!
