I agree. I graduated almost two years ago with a masters and bachelors in mechanical. I turned down three (what most people would say were good offers). None seemed quite right and I had both family obligations to take care of and travel I wanted to do. I traveled extensively in the lower 48 and Europe. I would have traveled more, but I had some other responsibilities. I have taken enormous flak from lots of folks for this non-mainstream existence (not slaving away at a job), but I suspect when I'm old and gray I will have made the right choice. If you can afford it and your parents are ok with it and will help you out, travel is immensely valuable. In some ways, more valuable (and cheaper) than classroom/book based education.
That said, you will find it much more difficult to find a job after taking time for yourself. When you find a job it will likely be a better one, but the search can be agonizing (especially compared to ease of on-campus recruiting).
