Here's the deal...under the new NSPS you can top out at 145K rapidly but not in your area (Groton CT?). OTOH, you'll need some field experience for gravitas andpromotion unless you're a real suckup and go straight to HQ somewhere in DC. NavSea don't get it...they screw their employees big time, probably 13 even in DC is a good grade. Just about any other HQ job in the Pentagon or OSD will get you a 15 but SES's are more difficult.
The new NSPS (national security personnel system) is a joke, but so was the older merit pay system. what part about civil service corruption dating from the Grant administration does this Administration not understand I'll never know. OTOH, the current one is so corrupt it probably considers nepotism, cronyism, Halliburtism normal and meritorious. Point is, Fed service may NOT be that secure. And the retirement under the new system sux compared to CSRS.
Your best bet is to go with GD and invest your 401K with company matching. Live on about 1/2 your salary and bank/invest the rest. Real estate is always good, buy a house. Marry well....virtually everyone who marries lives better than single although there are exceptions. Stay away from the hottie in the Trans Am with the screaming chicken on the hood. Ask me how I know this....
If you really want the Feds, get something going in private industry, contribute to your local ward heeler (chicago guys know who this is), party, volunteer, get into Kiwanis or Lions or somesuch, get an internship/cooperative (you've already interned) or Presidential Internship Program and get on the revolving door. We used to have a saying at OSD "don't play poker with Norm Augustine; I used it enough that a former USD got really pissed at me and said he had no problem playing poke with UNOWHO. Well, Josh Gotbaum is no longer USD and Norm is still involved with GD....HOOAH!
Also, do NOT go for the quick 200K in Iraq with KBR or Halliburton. The Green Zone isn't.
