A 335xi with the Premium and Sport packages - options included in the Black like leather and big wheels - retails for $43,500. If you want a color other than black, white, or red throw in another $500.
The A4 3.2 makes substantially less power, and similarly equipped is a $39000 proposition. The S4 is a more direct comparison to both the 9-3 and the 335, but is another $4k. There is no direct-comparison Audi model. The A6 is a much larger car, and I don't see how it fits in here.
There is no arguing resale value, but that has always been the case.
Bottom line: The 9-3 is offering a solid deal here. No, not a wonderful bargain, but a competitive car at a competitive price. Anyone who knows me is well aware I'm the first one to rail on Saab for releasing dumb products (anyone remember the '90s? :), but I really can't find any fault in the XWD platform in general, the Black specifically. It's great technology packaged in a fantastic looking car. I think Saab *should* price it right up there against its slightly upmarket competitors and give them and potential buyers something to think about. Yep, they're gonna be hurting when it comes to sell the thing, but I'll bet they'll also be having a lot more fun in the intervening years. By the specs XWD is *fantastic*, and Saab should do everything they can to let buyers know the Saab system leads the pack. A highline offering at a non-discounted price is strong position to take - I'm hopeful it works out!
