I am contemplating biking to work

I live in Waltham, MA (until next spring when we buy a house) and work in Burlington, MA. The backroads commute is a bit over 10 miles with a fair amount of hills. I have 2 co-workers who commute 9 and 16 miles (the latter via recumbant bike) to work.
Here's some questions - what's the cost for a half-decent commuter bike? What are the right types of bike to look for? How about assorted gear (air pumps, panniers etc etc)? Any tips for dealing with traffic? I spent my whole childhood and teen years biking and used to do 30 mile rides back when I was in HS, but that was about 15 years ago and I basically haven't biked since.
The motivations are rising gas prices and fitness. I can afford the gas, but it's getting pricey enough for my 9-5 to make me wonder about the cheapest alternative.
And finally...what's a good 9-5 wagon compatible bike rack?
