NC isn't a bad place to ride by any means. I was just trying to compare a very urban environment to a less urbanized one in terms of safety. It would be interesting to see some statistics, but I'd bet urban is lass safe in terms of injuries but perhaps more safe in terms of deaths.
I live in Chapel Hill, which is pretty bike friendly. I also like doing the occassional longer road ride and most of the two-lanes here have very narrow or zero shoulders and I can't help but think if I even get clipped it could be a very, very bad day. Still good fun though. I'll have to start getting out more, though when did it start being 90 degrees everyday!
