Ignore Mike Lynch he'll be the first in line for the last drop of gas. I would recomend Cycle Loft in Burlington. Listen to the advice of a decent shop like the already mentioned Wheelworks or Cycleloft, the advantage of Cycleloft is they'll be local to your place of work if you ever need service they'll be able to help you. The doom sayers don't generally ride bikes and will give you a hundred reasons not to ride but, it's easy once you decide to do it. I ride with my 8 year old to school every day (we've only missed 19 days this school year, including the Cape Cod winter) I make it a game everyday, I'm always amazed at the line of cars with parents dropping the kids off, they think I'm odd riding my bike, I'm pretty sure they're the odd ones burning gas for trips less than 5 miles and wondering why their kid is overweight. Commuting by bike can be done and should be done by more people. Look at http://www.1world2wheels.org it will give you insite into why we should ride. I like my cars and driving them, but wasting gas driving short trips is..wasteful. The reduction in stress, weight, and the savings in gas will be worth it. Plan on spending $500 to $1000 to get everything you'll need, or in gas terms 125-250 gallons +- 2500-5000 miles. You can easily recoup the cost in one year not buying gas.
Enjoy the ride,
George
