I did this today. It's not easy in the beginning but you'll be surprised at how quickly you get back into shape.
I have some suggestions;
Why not start with a used bike? If you're only cycling in during the good weather, then a used road bike might work the best. I just switched from a full rack to a quick release rear rack. Note that this only works if you travel "light" to work. Otherwise, panniers may work better. I bungee a very small duffle bag to the rack and away I go.
For bike racks for the wagon? The quickest and easiest way to get started is the Thule roof rack from Saab. You'll need the cross bars and at last least one bike rack. The nicest way I have found is the kind that connects into a trailor hitch but it may not be worth it to you.
As for racks? You'll have to ask yourself how much you will be bringing with you. I am pretty sure that my quick release rack wouldn't work well with lots of weight.
Note: A friend of mine who was using his road bike to commute to work in is now getting a full commuting bike with internal gearing, and will likely be adding fenders, lights, etc.
ps. I live near you. You'll find that a cycling vest might work better than a jacket for the summer AM cycling. A jacket is too warm once you get going and just a shirt is too cold.
