The problem is that there are not a lot of companies even in a position right now to purchase anyone else. Several months ago, yes there were opportunities, but to be honest I don't think any of the investors would have saved Saab - it would simply go away. I think it is far better right now for Saab to go on it's own.
In GMs case, however, I think they are more looking to get a boatload of money than anything else. If they are that bad, then the loan won't help them - they have no plans to get new products out there. If they do get this loan, it is also going to create a huge problem with Europe and trade agreements. It will only get worse.
There is no simple solution. The only way out I see is to make GM break apart (and i think Toyota and VW group as well) and then turn around and make sure people can get car loans at really good deals, which is going to get people buying cars again.
