Keeping Saab alive...reading between the lines..... I haven't seen or heard the presentation Rick Wagoner made in DC today, but have read some snippets of it on various internet business news sites. I am left with the impression it was custom tailored for the Burons in DC, and there is a lot left between the lines.
Concentrate on four brands; Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC.
Let's get real here! Buick only has three cars; the Lucerne, the Enclave, and the LaCrosse; and only the Enclave is a big seller. Buick and Pontiac are already being sold through the same Dealer network, so is GM planing to re-badge as Pontiacs as Buicks to have one brand with a full line-up of vehicles? No reduction in vehicles as there is no overlap of products, no reduction in advertising, but the Burons get a "discontinued brand" as a concession. I think I see some sly dogs here!
No Saturn or Saab.
Saturn has been a long term money loser, has no unique vehicles, and has a very small Dealer network. Eliminating Saturn may be a legitimate money maker.
Since no mention was made of Opel, Vaxhaul, or Holden, the presentation made in DC must be for North American brands only. Can Saab be transfered intact to GM-Europe where it would be more palatable for the Swedes to provide financial assistance to keep the brand alive? Saabs were sold in the US when they were an independent company, no reason they can't continue to be sold here as a GM-Europe product.
Hummer appears to be gone but that is no surprise. Keeping GMC is a surprise since every GMC truck is merely a re-badged Chevy truck. Heck, both brands sell vehicles called Suburbans (or did until recently)!
A lot of people want GM to sell Saab, but to who, and how? Saab has been so deeply integrated into the GM system/organization that selling Saab now would be akin to selling an apple that has already been cored, diced, and mixed into a fruit salad. Yes, the apple is still there, but not in a form that could be separated from the other ingredients.
I truly hope Saab survives.
