standard line of corporate posturing and telling the government what they want to hear. Notice the picture is painted only in broad strokes and generalities. Like driving to DC, saying they will sell the jets, and taking $1 salaries, this is just PR BS.
Keeping Chevy, Buick, Caddy and GMC sounds OK (except for Buick--why bother?). So does selling or closing Saturn. Closing Pontiac makes sense, but making it a niche brand seems goofy. Selling off Hummer has been in process for months with no takers. Selling Saab is totally expected. My guess is that if no buyer steps up they pull it from the US market and integrate it into Opel in Europe. And it will disappear.
But the devil is in the details of how they do this. I may be wrong, but I don't think a car maker can just pull the plug on a make due to franchise agreements with dealers, warranties on existing vehicles, parts supplies and suppliers. So whatever they do, it will play out over some indeterminate period of time. They can stop manufacturing a car, and sell out existing inventory (probably at fire sale prices), but consumer protection laws require parts, service and warranties to be available. There ways to deal with this, but GM has to define how all this will be handled, and sooner rather than later. Congress and consumers all need specifics about sales and support of all makes being dumped.
As for Ford, one has to wonder why they'd dump a premium brand with a loyal following like Volvo and keep rebadged cars like the entire Mercury line. More biz as usual corporate thinking from Detroit. Ford, Volvo and Lincoln should make a nicely profitable business.
Chrysler can just go away. I'm betting they're gone or absorbed by a foreign competitor inside of 18 months.
