I already picked a life style and a line of work that does not involve daily commute. I keep in touch with my clients mostly by email. Occasionally however, I do have to drive and work at remote locations for a full day, so living in a city and not having a car at all is quite out of the question . . . not to mention it's impossible to afford a place where I can have half acre of veggie garden (planning on getting more) and be within walking distance of a zip car or rental car place. City blocks are expensive when you try to price them by the acre.
As for why the SUV, I bought it years ago when I lived further out, and the 9-5 wagon was getting stuck in snow frequently due to being high-centered or being physically blocked as the car doesn't have enough clearance. Even after moving to my current location, the SUV was handy due to the hilly region that we live in. One time our house sitter got her car stuck in our drive way, and had to take our SUV to work. She was a rabid anti-SUV person before that incident. In fact, my wife used to be a rabid anti-SUV person; that's why we bought the 9-5; eventually she got sick of shovelling snow in the middle of the road in a snow storm. Now I'm stuck driving the wagon. LOL. BTW, the two vehicles get comparable gas mileage.
I wasn't the one who propped up the soapbox. Personally I support people using/wasting their own money on any pet/fetish ways they wish. Like I said, I have no problem with people burning gas at 5-10mpg going around in circles (called "racing"), but I do have problem with such person then accuse other people of waste when the latter buy more than a minimalist car.
