With lower octane gas, the engien will retard the timing and boost to reduce knocking. You'll step on the throttle more to get the same acceleration. That means you use MORE gas with lower octane.
Here's a quick calculation to compare: Let's say you get 25mpg and you dirve 15K miles/year. That's 600 gallons of gas. At $2.89/gallon for Premium, you pay $1734/year for gas. Now, let's assume you lose 1 mpg by using 89 Octane that you can buy for $2.79. At 24mpg, you use 625 gallons per year, at a total cost of $1743.25, So, you actually spent and extra $10 to use cheaper gas.
You can plug in your own number for the miles you drive and the current cost of regular and premium in your area. You will have to measure the MPG and the change will be greatily influenced by how and where you drive. However, even with some fairly agressive numbers, the money you save in a year is MINIMAL and you have a whole lot less fun.
Your choice.
