Some here claim the thermal efficiency of the various grades of gasoline makes a difference, but this has yet to be really quantified over multiple cars and drivers. There are lots of variables to fuel mileage and octane is only one of them. How you drive is probably the biggest variable. For example, does having less power on tap because you're running 87 octane gas result in less aggressive, but more economical driving than driving harder when you enjoy the extra poke from running premium? Next, there's condition of the car, traffic/road conditions, the kind of tires you have and if they are inflated properly. Then there's weather. Mileage will be worse in rain or windy conditions (especially on a highway trip) than on a clear day in calm air.
I find I often get better mileage going in one direction on the same route than in the other direction. It doesn't seem to be related to terrain. Is the car working better after say, a 300 mile run in one direction, so it gets better mileage coming back? Maybe. Half my mileage is local rural driving, the rest is 300 to 800 mile runs on interstates. I've seen this often enough so I think it may be one of the variables.
