It is not that the higher octane has a higher energy per volume, but that the higher octane has a greater resistance to detonation. This allows your engine's computer to do things like advance the timing of the opening of the intake valves and the spark, increase boost, etc. These things will increase power and somewhat increase efficiency (you get more out of what the fuel has to give). For example, the SAAB Biopower prototype gets over 300hp from E85, but only (about) 240hp from gasoline. This is because even though E85 has a much lower heating value (energy per volume) than gasoline, it has a far greater octane rating and the engine can be tuned to take advantage of that.
